Now forgive me for my next part, but I don't get to talk to very many people besides Porter. But this is my blog right? So stop reading now if you don't want my political yet somewhat religious commentary. My brother Justin told me that in priesthood last week the teacher said that there was a talk given in General Conference about 7 years ago concerning Seven Years of Feast and 7 Years of Famine. I started reading through some of the church talks around that time, and President Hinckley gave a talk in November 2001, right after September 11th called "The Times in Which We Live". There are no specific warnings, but he does say, "I do not know what the future holds. I do not wish to sound negative, but I wish to remind you of the warnings of scripture and the teachings of the prophets which we have had constantly before us. I cannot forget the great lesson of Pharaoh’s dream of the fat and lean kine and of the full and withered stalks of corn." Every morning when I turn on the news there is always more bad news. And to me, the most frightening thing of all is the fact that bills are being passed which are slowly turning our country into a socialist state without many people even realizing it.
Now I know that there are a lot of people out there that support the idea of socialism. I don't. It seems ideal to have everyone work for the good of everyone to share the wealth and have the government pay for everything etc., etc. In one of my classes in college, I wrote a paper about the United Order and the Law of Consecration. The attempts to live the law of consecration on this earth failed. And although the United Order is not the same as Socialism because it is a perfect law created by God and Socialism is far from perfect, it has a similar idea. I don't know, but I think if the church couldn't even live like this, certainly I don't think it would work very well in this world. The idea of heavily taxing everyone who makes over a certain amount of money doesn't work for me. I agree that the executives that got those huge bonuses shouldn't have gotten them, but now we are pretty much saying you only get to make as much money as the government wants you to. As my husband and my father both work in a small business, I do not support many of the ideas that are coming out of the government lately. But to me, I think that the President is using everything that is wrong in the United States right now to pass his agenda through. And people must either not realize it or they must support it. We don't want to call it socialism, but that is what our country is becoming. Now don't even get me started on the National Debt! The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of everyone else's money.
